This will be my personal contribution to the final exhibition next year. Emily is a wonderful folk singer and musician and has generously agreed to produce a soundtrack for my short animated film inspired by the seventyninemillion emigrant journals that I've recently read. You can hear her own compositions on her myspace page and find links where you can hear more. FIRE & BANGS was held at Harehope Quarry with bonfire, fireworks (ooooh aaaah), drumming and clog dancing by local young people. We also had projections on the quarry's classroom windows and on a sail/screen we built. Visitors enjoyed a torch lit walk to the quarry and a great family atmosphere. The work from four schools was screened and displayed as well as boat lanterns floating on the ponds. We held a workshop in the afternoon to produce a giant flying fish lantern.Steve Daleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00618667083698386581noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4736462166872705641.post-1346399699521462542008-10-01T10:20:00.000-07:002008-10-01T10:39:39.650-07:00Mr. Hillary's TripAfter a hectic week at Wolsingham Primary School, we pulled off a minor miracle. Working with Year 5 pupils we managed (in only 4 hours - the miracle)to produce 8 beautiful light boats and a two minute animated film based on 'Westland' the journal of John Hillary's trip to New Zealand in 1879. Mr. Hillary came from nearby Tow Law a hilltop village in the North Pennines.
Here's the film.
http://www.weardale-history.org.uk/Steve Daleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00618667083698386581noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4736462166872705641.post-67911371262456183802008-09-15T09:26:00.000-07:002008-11-19T12:03:37.577-08:00Kicking off again
Next week we're starting again after the summer break. This time we're doing a whole raft of activities with Wolsingham School. We hope to produce a short animation based on an imaginary emigrant's diary. Some of the kids at Wolsingham come from Tow Law which is the Durham village left behind by John Hillary in 1879. Mr. Hillary a fervent Sunday School teacher set of to New Zealand with his family, but after a dismal six months of little work and no prospects returned home to Blighty. He travelled on the Westland (see my previous entry).

This picture came from the Mary-Ann's Cottage blog - it's a painting of the Westland on the inside of a sea chest belonging to Mary-Ann's father who was a sailor on the maiden voyage.Steve Daleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00618667083698386581noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4736462166872705641.post-20358676623419968502008-08-07T02:55:00.000-07:002008-08-07T03:33:37.958-07:00And breathe .....What a manic few months it has been with house renovations, shows, workshops, films, books, animations all coming together and celebrated. Now offers the perfect opportunity for relaxation and brain de-frag and more ideas to grow and we can start to concentrate on the making and pulling together of material. Jan and I had a trip to Liverpool not to look at archives or anything but just to look at the presentation of material and information and breathe the scouse vibe in - it was top class and we learnt loads - how Liverpool has a very diverse population since many people from Europe came to Liverpool to begin their emigration journeys. I can just imagine the noises, the rabble of sounds and different languages you would hear - coming from Weardale this must have been so confusing. Whilst Weardale must have been a very dynamic place in the 1800s it also must have been very different, accoustically to the sounds of Liverpool.
http://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/maritime/
We also found a Gold Diggers Game for the Gold Diggings of Australia - would be good to make our own.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNm7pEXoZdjClEgDurJCJkwFcEbhwE6hYfEuqRNDsbYKgBqh1xRY6iYRqsatPDPziCZy6FtO67i1D7tigOQbDugxefokQe1mlPJx7P67fglDjOZZbJ1cMzD9LAbsTx0VEkIIV__1ORi-o/s200/golddiggersgame.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5231717007991679138" />

As with Steve's visitors it is time for some of us to get off on our own journeys and try and find some gold of our own in the form of the sun!!!Rachel Chttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05709043581272437606noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4736462166872705641.post-71656099073502886272008-07-22T09:29:00.000-07:002008-10-01T10:39:02.494-07:00WestlandDuring research for this project we stumbled on a really excellent artist's blog with a wonderful connection to the Westland - have a look Mary-Ann's Cottage - Caithness Scotland

The artist Joanne has some of our Janet's work on her blog - which is one of the best I've seen as she updates it very regularly unlike me!

Over the past few weeks I've been reading lots of accounts of emigrant journeys. There's such a variety of views: John Hillary actively enjoyed his journey and constantly comments on the excellent provisions, Thomas Blackah had a miserable time travelling to America and seemed to hate every minute, the Dobie sisters were more privileged and Mary made wonderful sketches. They all report seeing marvellous sights, sunsets, whales, icebergs, flying fish etc. John and Thomas had short unsuccessful stays and soon returned home but poor Mary Dobie was murdered after a few months in New Zealand.

http://graemewi.googlepages.com/thomasblackahdiarySteve Daleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00618667083698386581noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4736462166872705641.post-61670380536835222582008-07-22T09:12:00.000-07:002008-12-08T21:52:46.422-08:00The Summer

Here's three drawings made by pupils from Stanhope Primary School when we visited the Ashes Quarry. This time we're planning an animated film based on John Hillary's diary of his journey to New Zealand aboard the Westland in 1879. Mr. Hillary came from Tow Law a village up the hill from Wolsingham so some of the children will be from the same village.

Now I have to spend the summer planning my own contribution to the Semi Precious project in between visitors from Japan, South Africa and Australia - it's a busy year for travellers.Steve Daleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00618667083698386581noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4736462166872705641.post-72127469922874544832008-07-05T14:11:00.000-07:002008-12-08T21:52:46.481-08:00Roleplay at Stanhope School
Friday 4th July the year 6 gang spent the morning preparing stories about the lives of young workers in the quarries. Working from images of boys who were photographed in the limestone quarries of Weardale, they were given free range to come up with their own ideas of what life was like back then. Many suffered serious maimings and traumatic amputations, most were the main breadwinners for their families and almost all had a pet! Well it's probably all true. We spent the afternoon filming them in costume reciting (reading) their stories in between falling about laughing. It was a bloomin' good day.Steve Daleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00618667083698386581noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4736462166872705641.post-31404650625219604712008-06-27T11:49:00.000-07:002008-12-08T21:52:46.558-08:00Stanhope School and Stan
Today and yesterday we've been working with Stanhope Primary School in Weardale on a project to video an interview with one of Stanhope's senior citizens. Working with the year 5 & 6 group with the enthusiastic support of Mr. Sean Myers their teacher. On Thursday myself, Rachel & writer Chris Powell (also Rachel's next door neighbour) took the class into Ashes quarry where we met Stan Harrison, a former quarryman, who told us something about the history of this old quarry. Today, Friday, we set up a 'TV studio' and Stan took questions from the audience. The kids were amazing and the shooting went like a dream. Although there are still two working quarries in the dale there are few folk left who remember the old working methods. Next week we'll be doing a little more work on video, writing, drawing and photography to create a show for the rest of the school and mums and dads.Steve Daleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00618667083698386581noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4736462166872705641.post-49762457046720805592008-06-19T13:03:00.000-07:002008-06-19T15:29:20.984-07:00Semi Precious Canadian FilmThree sections of film shot in Dawson City and then edited in UK in 2006. Only just got round to putting this online but thought it might be good for the world to seeee and get it out there. The film loosely follows the story of John Wilkinson, miner from Weardale who struck gold in the Klondike before the Gold Rush of 1898. In 2005 I did a residency at the Klondike Institute of Art and Culture and collected lots of information about Mr Wilkinson and his journey and my journey into discovering him. I have since found more information and more photos and would really love to re-edit the material without my narrative voice over. The residency and the experience influenced the Semi Precious project that you see today. The snow made everything look absolutely amazing and really accentuated the harshness of the rocks and the landscape. It were blummin freezin. We did a recce on Monday and took some photographs. The sky was amazing but it did bleach the landscape and there was a lot of glare from the snow. Unfortunately when we went to shoot on Tuesday the weather had changed and there was hardly any snow and quite a lot of water and general rain about but we did manage to do a shoot in the morning. Rob has done a short edit and Tom Dales made some music to go with it and here it is. Rob is doing a bit more of an edit over the next week or so. We look forward to seeing that.
Rachel Chttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05709043581272437606noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4736462166872705641.post-53595988687783024102008-03-14T16:52:00.000-07:002008-12-08T21:52:49.102-08:00Here's a quick pic of Dick!

Here is lovely Dick helping us at the archive.
Emma the Boorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06937132094855915168noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4736462166872705641.post-29339740923137585232008-03-14T16:23:00.000-07:002008-12-08T21:52:49.163-08:00First visit to the archive

Hello world, today I have had my first ever visit to an archive at Killhope North of England lead mining museum it wasnt half as brown and heritage like as I thought it would be. Everyone was so lovely and helpful and it was so ordered, I admire anyone with that much patience. Each file was tied up lovingly with special string, each file was lovingly filed away in its special place in its special box. If I was an archive document I would like to be cared for this well! Me and Rachel copied lots of pictures of the Margaret Galbraith, a ship that carried many Weardale folk off to New Zealand in the C19th. We also had a good read of the Graham letters which was really difficult, as it just looked like a series of squiggles on a page but eventually we tuned our eyes in and started to get the gist. Unfortunately today was the last day of winter for the volunteers therefore we can not get access until Nov when they open their drawers again .....

Rachel Chttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05709043581272437606noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4736462166872705641.post-89707811294358846322008-03-11T20:26:00.000-07:002008-12-08T21:52:49.472-08:00Colours
Just been reading Peter Bowes - Clearing the Forest. Very interesting and gives a good outline of when communities left the dale for work.

Here is a colour scheme for the forthcoming art work and website. Have put up a lovely window display in the Community Hub window aswell and have the leaflets for the training days fully out there now. All we got to do is start the proper research and get the full website up and running yeeehaa!!!!Rachel Chttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05709043581272437606noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4736462166872705641.post-52817020862234427402008-02-18T07:20:00.000-08:002008-02-17T23:20:26.491-08:00Semi Precious projectHello,

I'm off to Durham County Records Office today to look at some archives of Wolsingham from the 1940's.

A survey was carried out to find occupations of persons over 15 years of age. I hope that this will reveal two things: occupations relating to quarrying, unusual (possibly foreign) surnames.

Hopefully this will reveal some useful background for work with Wolsingham Primary school later in the year.

Steve
Steve Daleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00618667083698386581noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4736462166872705641.post-78245898413045181182008-02-17T13:44:00.000-08:002008-02-17T13:56:44.074-08:00Starting Semi PreciousThis will be a short post just to get the project blog started and test all is working fine and dandy.Rachel Chttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05709043581272437606noreply@blogger.com0
